The Kitchen Pantry Parkade

A child decided to use the pantry in the kitchen centre as a parkade for all the toy cars and trucks from another centre. He combined other people’s ideas about play centres to create something new, and made it work. His idea was fun because it expanded the play possibilities for him and his friends within existing resources.

The children incidentally took toys from one centre to another, contrary to their normal routine.  As a result of this event, and a workshop she attended, the teacher is thinking that presenting children with toys or activity centres that have specific purposes may decrease their opportunities for creative play.

Description

I can get new ideas, or build on or combine other people’s ideas, to create new things within the constraints of a form, a problem, or materials.

I can get new ideas, build on other’s ideas and add new ideas of my own, or combine other people’s ideas in new ways to create new things or solve straightforward problems. My ideas are fun, entertaining, or useful for me and for my peers, and I have a sense of accomplishment. I can usually make my ideas work within the constraints of a given form, problem and materials if I keep playing with them.
