Burlap Sac Dress

A student takes an opportunity to change a graduation tradition and help raise funds for people in need.

During her grade 12 year a student realized that she would rather use money that would be spent on a graduation dress for prom in a way that would benefit others. She ultimately decided that she would forgo a fancy dress and would wear a burlap sac to grad. During her grad year the student’s class made a trip to Manila where the student learned about the orphanage they visited. She then made a decision that she would send any money she raised for wearing a burlap sac to grad to this orphanage. The public learned about the modest student’s campaign from her friends and she was able to raise over $10,000. In October, following her graduation, the student returned to the orphanage in Manila and donated the funds to the orphanage.
