About the assessment

The Évaluation de littératie de la 12e année – Français langue seconde – immersion assesses the fundamental aspects of literacy for Grade 12 students.

Literacy is the ability to critically analyze and make meaning from diverse documents and to communicate and express oneself in a variety of modes and for a variety of purposes in relevant contexts.

The literacy assessment is not based on a particular course. Rather, it combines competencies associated with various subjects studied throughout students’ educational path.

Structure of the assessment

The Évaluation de littératie de la 12e année has two components, oral and written.

Oral component

The oral component is made up of two separate parts. Students demonstrate their oral competencies in oral communication while presenting convincing arguments.

  • Part 1 – Taking a stance: Students are presented with a question and listen to an audio clip to stimulate their reflection on the topic. Students then draw on their knowledge and/or or life experience to take a stance on the topic.
  • Part 2 – Argumentation: Students answer a debatable question, then draw on their knowledge and/or life experience to take a stance on the topic.
  • Self-reflection: At the end of the oral component, the Self-reflection section invites students to reflect on the assessment that has just taken place. This section is not assessed.

Written component

  • Part A (common core)
    Part A is the same for all students. In this part, they read, watch and listen to various documents centered around an essential question. Documents examined take different forms: Indigenous narrative, article, advertisement, novel, album, tale, legend, comic strip, biography, correspondence, guideline, diagram, graphic, news report, film, song, poem, nursery rhyme, photograph, image, work of art, oral presentation, blog, survey report, short text message (SMS), podcast, interview, speech, infographic, etc. Students then answer various types of selected-response questions to demonstrate their understanding of the documents.
  • Part B (student’s choice): 
    This part offers students a choice between two pathways: The world of information and The world of expression. Both pathways are of comparable difficulty level. Students choose a pathway according to their strengths and interests.
    • In the World of information pathway, the document can present information in a variety of forms. For example, article, editorial, historical documents, interview, news report or statistics.
    • In the World of expression pathway, the document presents various modes of expression. For example, blog, song lyrics, poem, written monologue, work of art or literary text.

      In each pathway, students read a document related to the essential question. They then answer different types of selected-response questions to demonstrate their understanding of the document examined and complete one (written) constructed-response question: analysis. In addition, to demonstrate their competencies in written communication, students write an essay in which they take a stance and present convincing arguments supported by examples, drawing on their knowledge and/or life experience.
       
  • Self-reflection:
    For the written component, the Self-reflection section asks students to reflect on the assessment that has just taken place. This section is not assessed.

Activities to prepare for the assessment

The best way to become familiar with the literacy assessment is to work through the sample assessments (Form A and Form B), read the marking guide, explore the examples of student responses and refer to the assessment design specifications.

Additional information

The written component takes place at a different time from the oral component. For important information about the assessment procedures, refer to the administration guide.

For French immersion program students:

The Évaluation de littératie de la 12e année – Français langue seconde – immersion is a summative assessment of French literacy that determines the student’s proficiency level at the end of the immersion program. Students must take this assessment when they are in Grade 12.

However, if students:

  • have completed all courses taught in French required to obtain the immersion program diploma (Dual Dogwood), 
    AND
  • will not take any courses taught in French during their Grade 12 year,

they can take the Évaluation de littératie de la 12e année – Français langue seconde – immersion, for a first time, in Grade 11.

This exception applies only to the Évaluation de littératie de la 12e année – Français langue seconde – immersion and not to any other assessment of the Ministry of Education and Child Care.

Marking of the assessment

The answers to the constructed-response questions of the oral and written components of the assessment are marked by a team of teachers from various regions of the province.

Field test

Once a year, the Ministry of Education and Child Care invites immersion teachers and students to participate in a field test of the written component of the Évaluation de littératie de la 12e année — Français langue seconde — immersion (LTF12). This field test is part of a process to collect data on student responses before an official administration. It also allows students to familiarize themselves with the assessment site, practice the assessment, and provide feedback to the Ministry to improve the assessment.
